In addition to our regular groups, courses and workshops, we run a range of community events throughout the year including festive family activities and our environmentally friendly print workshops in the Green Crafts Village at Glastonbury Festival. Since 2019 we have produced Evercreech Jack in the Green, a contemporary folk revival celebration that takes place on the first Saturday in May in the village of Evercreech, bringing together the local community to welcome the arrival of summer through ancient tradition reimagined for modern times. The event begins with creative workshops where a ten-foot wicker Jack is dressed in flowers and foliage by volunteers, before being brought to life in a joyous procession through the village accompanied by musicians, drummers, morris dancers and followers. At the celebration field Jack is ceremonially "slayed" to release the Spirit of Summer—a joyful female icon who embodies the warmth and abundance of the season ahead. This nonprofit community event invites people of all ages to participate in flower crown making, music, dance and creativity. Everyone is welcome to join the procession and celebration.
As part of our event in 2019, West End theatre Puppet Maker David Cauchi collaborated with the studio to create our 10 foot willow Jack, inspired by an amalgamation of Somerset beasts. In the same year, stonemason Gary King ran 2019 miles to raise funds for Surfers Against Sewage and brought our Evercreech Jack to life. During 2021 The Old Stores Studio CIC commissioned artist Libby Bove to create The Spirit of Summer; an embodiment of eternal female strength, knowledge and wisdom. In 2022, our Frith Hare was handmade byVivien Booth from the Luna Lapin pattern by Sarah Peel. It was created for educational outreach in schools as a focus for discussions about inclusion, equality, diversity and the plight of refugees. In 2025 we welcomed the formation of a new character The Godminster Cheney. Our Spirit of Summer icon has been the focus of fundraising efforts for Choose Love and also in this year inspired an all-female Morris side Somerfyre evolved from our Spirit of Summer morris side and has inspired No Knees Folk collective's Grandma Sun. In recent years we have worked with Wilf's Wood to deliver our event, a new community re-wilding project and natural community space located near to the studio.
See our social media for details of future community events.
